Clarita’s Bathroom Cleaning Tips

Ugh, is it already time again? Cleaning the bathroom: It’s one of those chores that almost no one looks forward to, but it is one of the most important places in your house cleaning process. I’m sure it comes as no surprise that the bathroom is one of the dirtiest places in any given home, so that means it is very important to clean it pretty often, especially to get rid of any infectious bacteria that may have made it into the house.

The Most efficient ways to clean your bathroom

For cleaning gear, you’ll want to have a small, fresh trash bag, some cleaning rags, paper towels, a mop or sponge mop, a broom or dust brush and pan, disinfecting cleaner spray, either all-purpose cleaner or rubbing alcohol, gloves, and some baking soda/vinegar solution (you can make this by combining 1 ½ cups of baking soda, ½ cup warm water, ½ cup of liquid soap, and 2 tablespoons of white distilled vinegar together. After it stops foaming, place the mixture in a spray bottle).

This all seems like a lot, but it can be easily found in stores and will help the most to give your bathroom a deep clean. And of course, when working with vinegar, ammonia, or rubbing alcohol, make sure you do not combine any chemicals containing bleach or hydrogen peroxide with them. When combined, they can result in dangerous and sometimes toxic gases and compounds. If you decide to use bleach-based cleaners instead of the recommended ones, make sure you leave the window open to keep the cleaning space well-ventilated, as the fumes can be harmful.

Hang your trash bag on the bathroom door. Take the bathroom items you have stored on counters, the side of the tub, etc. (you don’t want them getting in the way of cleaning) and place them into a bucket or storage tray. If you don’t have anything like that, you can easily find perfectly functional ones at a nearby dollar store. Setting the storage tray with bathroom products as well as any place mats outside the room, for now, take your broom/dust brush and dust the room, starting with the ceiling and working your way down. The dust and anything else which has gathered on the floor since the last cleaning can be swept up and placed in the trash bag you hung up earlier.

Now, take your disinfectant spray and cover your shower with a good layer of cleaning solution and let it sit. If you have stains or soap scum, use your vinegar/baking soda solution instead.

While the cleaning spray is doing its work, you can spray down the countertops and surfaces with your disinfecting spray and wipe them down with cleaning rags or paper towels. Do the same for the walls, tiles, cabinet doors, sink, and other areas. You can clean your mirror by spraying it with disinfectant and wiping it with paper towels until you clear away all the streaks from the glass. Lastly, pour some of the baking soda and vinegar solution down the drain to disinfect it and prevent clogs from building up.

Now, put on your gloves, it’s toilet time. Spray the rim of the toilet bowl, the top and bottom of the lid, the top of the water chamber, and inside the toilet using a disinfectant. Then using either a separate rag or paper towels, wipe the seat, the lid, and underneath the lid. For inside the toilet bowl, use a toilet brush and clean all around. To finish, just flush the toilet.

Since the cleaning spray on the shower/bath has had time to work, you can use your rag to wipe across the whole surface of the stall, cleaning up any remaining spatters of the disinfectant. Also, be sure to pour some of your baking soda and vinegar solution down the drain of the shower.

Next, mix some all-purpose cleaner into the water. If you don’t have any all-purpose cleaners due to shortages, then you can make some floor cleaners yourself. Just mix together 2 cups of water, ½ cup of white vinegar, ¼ cup of 70% rubbing alcohol, and an optional couple of drops of scented essential oil (we recommend orange) to make something equivalent to an all-purpose cleaner. Dip a mop or sponge mop into the water-cleaner solution. Now your floor cleaning will get rid of bacteria, germs, and viruses

Once you clean the floor of the bathroom, you can place the bathroom product back where they go, cleaning the surfaces of them as you take them out of the holding tray/bucket. Once everything is back in its rightful place, take the rug you removed from the bathroom and check the cleaning tag on it to check if it is machine washable. If it is, put it in your washer, add laundry soap, and wash with cold water in a gentle setting. To dry it, you should use the lowest heat setting you have on your dryer. High heat settings can damage rugs, especially ones with rubber backing, and they can even cause them to catch fire, so be careful.

Following this process will leave you with a perfectly clean and disinfected bathroom. Hopefully, we’ve been able to simplify the process into something you can DIY. It is recommended that you clean your bathroom about once every week. It can be a strenuous job, but the relief of knowing that your fanny is safe from an unsanitary toilet seat is worth the effort
